Born in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Mitsy Campbell—known to audiences as Shuga—found her voice in church, where she first honed her powerful, soulful style. Her talent quickly led to a five-year touring role as a background vocalist for Tanya Stephens, an experience that gave her early exposure to international stages and set the foundation for her solo career.
Shuga’s journey took a pivotal turn when she entered the Digicel Rising Stars competition. Winning the title in 2009 introduced her to a nationwide audience and led to her signing with Donovan Germain’s Penthouse Records. Under Germain’s guidance, she released singles like “Complicated Love,” “9.58,” and “Give My Soul to Jah,” as well as a Black History Month tribute, “Ebony.” These early releases
showcased her talent and led to collaborations with respected artists like Sly and Robbie, Marcia Griffiths, Queen Ifrica, Agent Sasco, and Bugle.

Her music has resonated widely, with standout successes such as “Love so Good” with Bling Dawg, the powerful anthem “Stand Against Rape” featuring Marcia Griffiths, Alaine, Tessanne Chin, and others, and the catchy, rhythm-driven track “Ride De Riddim.” These songs have become fan favorites, amplifying her reach and solidifying her place in contemporary reggae.
After a short break to focus on family and motherhood, Shuga returned to music with a fresh perspective, finding that her new experiences shaped her approach to songwriting. “Family life and motherhood is like a magic carpet,” she says. “Everything
falls into place with love.”
Since 2022, Shuga has kept up a steady pace, releasing songs like “My Journey,” a look back on her path in the industry, and a cover of Cornell Campbell’s 1982 track, “Boxing Around.” Both were produced by Donovan Germain, continuing her collaboration with Penthouse Records. Her rendition of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas,” featured on VP Records’ Reggae Christmas Classics album, has also
become a seasonal favorite.
In addition to her studio work, Shuga has taken the stage at notable events like the Marcia Griffiths and Friends show in Florida and Rita Marley’s 76th birthday celebration. Her live performances include a tribute segment dedicated to reggae’s influential women, with Marcia Griffiths being a particularly strong influence. Beyond performances, Shuga’s digital reach has expanded, with a recent freestyle for Europe’s Little Lion Sound gaining traction across her social media and streaming platforms.
Looking ahead, Shuga is gearing up for the release of her debut album, Girl from Montego Bay, in early 2025. Her newest single, “Love Doctor,” will be available on November 7, 2024, followed by a performance at the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival on November 10. With plans to tour, connect with more listeners, and bring her vision to larger stages, Shuga aims to create a lasting impact. She aspires to be a role model for young women pursuing their talents with integrity.
“I want to set an example for talented girls who simply want to share their art,” Shuga says. Her music is crafted to inspire, uplift, and resonate with those who value authenticity.
